Bihar Sports University has been set up at Rajgir through Bihar Act 21 of 2021 (i.e. Bihar Sports University Act, 2021). An ancient city located in the Nalanda District in the state of Bihar, Rajgir is a famous pilgrim centre for Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Islam and Sikh. Established on 24 February 2023, the University is an emerging Institution in the field of Sports Sciences and Physical Education. The Campus of the University was inaugurated by Shri Nitish Kumar, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Bihar on 29th August, 2024, coinciding with National Sports Day 2024. The state-of-the-art campus of the University – cum – Academy offers training facilities in 24 sports disciplines, including indoor and outdoor games, featuring an Athletics Track, Football Ground, Hockey Turfs, International Cricket Stadium and Courts for Basketball / Volleyball / Handball / Lawn Tennis / Badminton.
In January 2025, the University Grants Commission (UGC) recognised the University under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. This recognition empowers the University to commence academic programs in Sports Sciences and Physical Education. The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
